Job Description
The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratories (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Scientist in the Food Microbiology section of the Epidemiologic Support Group. The Food Microbiology laboratory performs classical and advanced microbiology testing on food and environmental samples for the presence of bacterial agents or associated toxins during foodborne outbreaks or in support of food recalls under investigation by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). This individual will be responsible for performing routine surveillance and emergency response testing for the isolation, characterization and subtyping of foodborne pathogens occurring naturally or as a result of terrorism and communicating these findings to agencies such as VDH, VDACS, USDA and the FDA.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform microbiological testing for food sample analysis at DCLS. This position also supports the implementation of molecular methodologies and the maintenance and expansion of the ISO 17025 scope of accreditation.
## Minimum Qualifications
Successful candidates will possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Microbiology, Microbiology, Medical Technology, or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Significant experience working in a Food Microbiology and/or an Environmental biology laboratory is required.
The successful candidate will possess the following: the ability to perform moderately and highly complex microbiology laboratory procedures independently; knowledge and experience in microbiology techniques involving different sample matrices including food. Candidates must demonstrate effective team communication skills, including training and retraining of staff; experience with complex instrumentation and computerized laboratory information management systems; excellent quantitative analysis skills and the ability to follow standard operating procedures; knowledge and experience with laboratory safety procedures; ability to record, interpret and document laboratory findings and validation data; troubleshooting of assay and instrumentation performance; understanding of laboratory QC/QA concepts and theory, including ISO 17025; excellent communication skills (oral and written); ability to lift up to 30 pounds; experience with computers, including spreadsheets, MS Office products, and lab software programs.
## Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree in Food Microbiology, Microbiology, or Medical Technology is preferred.
Experience with molecular testing methodologies is preferred.

Some after-hour, weekend and holiday work required.
