Disaster Grants Support Intern
# Position Information

Job Description
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) is seeking dynamic, high-energy professionals. VDEM's mission is to sustain a Commonwealth that is safe, secure and resilient, especially before, during and after emergencies and disasters. We are seeking individuals who can inspire others to raise the bar for performance, as well as leverage expertise and resources to support emergency management. VDEM'S priority is to ensure Virginia is ready for the hazards of today while preparing for the threats of tomorrow. This requires individuals who are customer-service-oriented and innovative, and willing to take on complex challenges. We are seeking students currently enrolled at an accredited college or university to engage in the application of theory in a practical setting. This involves supervised experiences obtained in a professional setting where the intern is expected to engage in work which requires the practical use of theory and skills gained during their classwork.
Over the past 25 years, VDEM has purchased and demolished over 400 vulnerable structures in the floodplain through FEMA's hazard mitigation assistance grants. VDEM is looking for a student intern to assist in verifying the address points of these structures by reviewing electronic and paper documentation. The position would then involve soliciting requests to local governments to verify that parcel of land that was purchased remains an open space. As a part of this process, the position will be collecting and cataloging important data associated with the structures. The files may contain elevation certificates, photos, and deed restriction language. Some on-site visits to these project locations may be required and creating data files to better track these points in the future would also be in the scope of this project.
Applications of interest are being accepted for our Disaster Grants Support Summer Intern vacancy to work with our Finance and Grants division as an opportunity to learn about hazard mitigation grants, and their importance in reducing future risks to natural hazards, specifically flooding. The student will also learn about hazard mitigation planning, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with these types of projects. The student will also gain an understanding of grant processes, grant awards, and closeout/site visit requirements. The student will be working with local governments, VDEM regional support and grant staff, and state agencies.
