Job Description
The Richmond Office of the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission seeks a dynamic, dedicated and client-centered litigator to serve as an Assistant Public Defender. The Office of the Public Defender is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity or our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. Overview of the Position:
An Assistant Public Defender combines their demonstrated dedication to the representation of indigent clients with their strong and zealous litigation skills to provide exceptional representation on behalf of all their clients. The attorney in this position is expected to work independently in managing a large active caseload while simultaneously working in a team-oriented environment focused on a client-centered approach to representation. The office is normally open from 8:30 until 5:00, Monday through Friday; however, the nature of the work often demands more than a forty-hour week. The applicant hired for this position will be employed at will.
Primary Duties:
* Comprehensive and zealous representation of indigent defendants at every stage of the criminal process.
* Ability to competently and resourcefully prepare for and manage an active caseload.
* Actively communicate with clients, team members, and other professionals for optimal client outcomes.
## Minimum Qualifications
* Demonstrated commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense.
* Personal enthusiasm, optimism and a sense of humor.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
* Ability to work independently and effectively manage a large active caseload.
* Ability to work long hours and weekends, when needed.
* Active membership in good standing in the Virginia Bar.
* A valid driver's license and vehicle to travel to all courts and regional jails.
## Preferred Qualifications
* Criminal trial experience or exposure in Virginia.
* Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage, but is not required.
* Certification by the VIDC, to represent clients charged with misdemeanor offenses.
## Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check, verification of employment history and reference verifications.
Being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment. The VIDC does not sponsor employment visas. Sponsors includes H-1B or any other employment-based immigration cases or visa statuses.
